Tarangire National Park ...

Situated just a 2 hour drive from Arusha which covers an area of 2700 square kilometres with a mixture of grassland and flood plain.

The parks undulating landscape is dominated by the river valley which the park is named after. There are areas of large baobab trees, some of them 100’s of years old in the north of the park. Elsewhere there are groves of palm trees, open bushland and acacia woodlands.

The animals instinctively know there will be fresh grass during the rainy season, so have their calves from Jan through to March, to make the most of the fresh new grass. Through April and May, the vegetation and standing water disperses the wildlife to become less concentrated.

Oryxes and Eland begin to return in June, tailed by large numbers of elephants. Tarangire is famous for its large herds of elephants. The wildebeest and zebrs then join the party through July. By mid August the Tarangire river is the last reliable water source acting as a magnet to all the animals back into the valley. Giraffe, waterbuck, impala, warthogs and lesser kudu tend to remain in the park, choosing not to migrate.

The main predators in the park are leopard, lion, cheetah and spotted hyena. There is also a long list of other species you may be lucky enough to see. To give you a flavour of the numbers of animals in Tarangire ecosystem, there are approximately 32,000 zebra, 30,000 impala, 25,000 wildebeast, 6,000 buffalo and 3,000 elephant.

Tarangire is an excellent park for bird spotting with over 350 different species having been recorded. The best time of year for this is between Oct and April.
