Olduvai is the mispronunciation of the the Maasai word Oldupai, a type of wild sisal (grass), and is known as the cradle of mankind. This steep sided ravine within the eastern Serengeti was the site where Louis and Mary Leakey discovered some of the earliest evidence of humans on the planet, and is now one of the world’s most important archaeological sites.
Exposed deposits show rich fossil fauna, many hominoid remains and items belonging to the oldest stone technologies, called olduvian. The objects have to be dated to be as old as 2.1 million years old.
The 3.75 million year old fossilized footprints found be Dr Leakey in 1975 at nearby Laetolli, proved that our human ancestors walked in an upright position. There is also an interesting museum on the site giving interesting talks and information.
