This national park is one of the smaller parks covering 127 square miles, of which 89 is covered by the alkaline and soda waters of the lake, which are covered with pink flamingos. The majority of the land area is a narrow strip running between the Gregory Rift wall to the west ad waters edge to the east. The rift escarpment provides a spectacular backdrop to this scenic park.
The main route through the park is a loop, the entrance gate doubling up as the exit. The northern part of the park is covered with pretty woodland and forest. These are fed by freshwater streams and springs permeating through porous volcanic rock. As you proceed south, the rock becomes more crystalline forcing the water to tumble over waterfalls on the escarpment walls.
Lake Manyara is a paradise for birdwatchers with over 400 species being recorded. It is also famous for its tree climbing lions, which lead to many debates as to why they do this as, its very unusual and unique to this area. Elephant, wildebeest, buffalo and giraffe can be spotted amongst the trees or nearer the waters edge, as well as a long list of other species.
